In order to guard journalists from falling prey to fake news stories, Google India said it will provide training to 8,000 journalists in English and six other Indian languages in the next year.

To achieve this, Google News Initiative India Training Network will select 200 journalists from the country who will hone their skills with regard to verification and training in a five day train-the-trainer boot camp that will be organized for English and six other languages.

These 200 certified trainers will then train more journalists in a one-day, two-day and half-day workshops that will be organized by the network. The training workshop will be organized in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil in cities across the country. The main focus of the training will lie on fact checking, digital hygiene and online verification for the journalists using a curriculum that will be built by the experts from First Draft, BoomLive, Storyful, DataLeads, Factchecker.in and AltNews.

Irene Jay Liu, Google news lab lead, Asia Pacific stated that supporting trusted and authoritative media sources is a top most priority for Google which is why the company is proud to have collaborated with DataLeads, Internews and BoomLive to support the journalists in their fight against misinformation in the country. Google aims to become the largest training network in the world by training more than 200 trainers who will then train 8,000 journalists in six languages over the year.
